We’re used to dealing with anti-Blackness, especially on holidays like Juneteenth and during Black History Month. Remember when Walmart got caught up trying to sell a "Juneteenth" inspired ice cream in 2022?
This year, a Kroger grocery store in Atlanta took the cake for similar foolishness. Literally. In a recent viral TikTok video, a shopper shows the store's collection of Juneteenth cookie cakes, which appear haphazardly decorated in a way that feels like complete mockery. We know this holiday whitewashing isn’t new.
Balchem, Walmart’s Juneteenth ice cream manufacturer, tried to trademark "Juneteenth" in 2021. During Black History Month, big brands often launch products and Black "inspired campaigns” to capitalize on Blackness. For example, Adidas once released a shoe during Black History Month called "Ultraboost Uncaged." UNCAGED?
We know the truth. Since enslavement, our bodies, labor, intellectual property, and creativity have been undermined and disrespected. But we don’t have to support any act of performative allyship.
We don't need to support white corporations using Black holidays to market to us. We'll keep being Black and beautiful, celebrating as we always have, surrounded by Black joy and love, and supporting our businesses.
