In 2018, two men were arrested at a drug raid in L.A. – during which police lied about a suspect holding a weapon that he didn’t have! When one detective didn’t want to lie, they moved forward with the false report anyway.
But now, more truth than they expected is all coming out.
The officers behind the scheme were Noel Lopez and Pedro Guerrero-Gonzalez, who faced charges TWO years after McGinty finally reported the lies.
Also exposed? The two are also members of one of L.A.’s notorious police gangs!
Deputy Noel “Crook” Lopez allegedly hosted Banditos meetings – one of the many police gangs that boast tattoos, hazing, and a “code of silence.” And to be initiated? You have to prove you used excessive force on someone!
And amidst all of this, a case was still in progress. In court, the prosecutor said to the jury: “What did it matter? The man who was arrested probably was up to no good, right?” The reason it mattered: “it’s a lie.”
We can't depend on the few cops who do expose their departments' lies to speak up, especially if speaking up isn't in their best interests. We have to look at the whole system as one that enables and protects police lies – a system that isn't in our best interest.
