At only about two months old, Sobhuza II became King of Swaziland. What kind of ruler would he become when he was old enough to truly take over?
In the early years of Sobhuza’s reign, British colonizers held power and refused to recognize him as a ruler. These racists ignored the will of the people. They had no interest in Black people ruling a Black country!
The racists had stolen land from the Black natives, and they intended to keep it. As Sobhuza II grew into his role of King, he focused on taking back his people’s land. How did he intend to do it?
He married over 70 wives, fathered hundreds of children, and had over 1000 grandchildren! He developed the country’s natural resources and made secret agreements with Swaziland’s neighbors for political protection and true democracy. Sobhuza ensured his lineage would remain connected to the land!
This wise king eventually defeated the colonists, and his descendants still rule today! The political interests of our people are not always in line with those in power. How can you help ensure our voices are always heard and attended to?
