What Would Black Spirituality Look Like Had It Not Been For Colonization?

Africa's rich tapestry of cultures pulsates with divine reverence for ancestral spirits, fusing ancient wisdom with untamed fervor. There is a profound connection between the tangible and intangible realms. How did colonization impact this potent spiritual connection?

Religion was weaponized to erase cultural identities, impose dominance, and solidify control over traditional African communities. By converting tribes into masses devoid of their own beliefs, practices, and customs, Europeans stripped away dignity and autonomy.

Brandishing Bibles like weapons and vilifying indigenous African spiritual rites ate away at centuries-old traditions, so many Africans chose to weave together past beliefs with their new realities. This was especially true as the Atlantic slave trade and Triangular trade removed Africans ever further away from their physical homelands.

Yet, amidst the conquest of body and soul, a magnificent rebirth is unfolding today. Black people across the diaspora are dramatically reclaiming our spiritual roots. Through rediscovering traditional practices long repressed, we are resurrecting a heritage denied for centuries.

Assimilating to survive was a necessary adaptation; however, our ability to sustain and heal our spirits has also grown from our communities as we fought for freedom. How can we lean into spirituality even more as we push toward liberation?
